The Strategic Nuclear Forces Dataset
The Strategic Nuclear Forces dataset describes times-series-cross-sectional information on all nuclear-armed states’ strategic nuclear forces. The dataset provides three indicators: the deliverable strategic warhead count, the equivalent megatonnage (EMT) index, and the counter military potential (CMP) index.
You can access the documents and files about the dataset through the links below.
With collaboration with Bastian Herre (from the Our World in the Data), I transform the dataset into a monadic form. Given that the monadic version of the dataset rests upon different assumptions (e.g., it no longer takes into account information on the distance between states and the range of delivery platforms), users of the dataset should carefully think about what the indicators of different versions of the dataset measure and whether they are suitable given the theoretical concepts they are interested in. The codebook for the dataset will be available soon. Based on the dataset, several interactive charts, which were created by the Our World in the Data team's fantastic work, are available here.
Version 1.0 of the dataset file can be downloaded here.
Update Log
1/30/2024: upload the monadic version of the dataset file.
9/15/2023: upload Version 2.0 of the data note, dataset file, and codebook, along with the update note.
5/31/2022: minor edits to the codebook
5/11/2022: minor edits to the codebook
You can access the documents and files about the dataset through the links below.
- Data note (v2.0): this document explains conceptual elements underlying the dataset, including: definitions, assumptions, and formulas. It also contains information on sources and raw data that are used to construct the indicators.
- Dataset file (v2.0): this file contains information on all nuclear-armed states’ strategic nuclear forces from 1949 to 2010. The file is structured as a non-directed nuclear dyad dataset.
- Codebook (v2.0): this document describes all of the variables included in the dataset file.
- Update note: this document describes all of the edits that were made to update the data note and the dataset file.
